New Leyland Action Committee bulletin out now! Articles, facts, ideas, and proposals on this year's pay review, plus a look at last year's experience and reports from the plants. THERE MAY still be a fight against the public service cuts which Lothian Regional Council is imposing on its unwilling employees.

An emergency meeting of 75 NALGO shop stewards from the social work department voted on the Wednesday September 1 to call a mass meeting of members for Friday September 10 in work time.

At this meeting the shop stewards' committee will recommend indefinite all-out strike action until the council removes its threat to shed 300 jobs in the department through redeployment.

The new SDP-backed Tory administration will probably welcome this opportunity to test out the Tory anti-union laws.

There is no doubt that these workers will be in a vulnerable situation unless there is immediate solidarity action from the other Lothian Region NALGO members and a national mobilisation by local government this conflagration.

There is some tradition of fighting government cuts in Lothian because unions and Labour council tried to resist the government last year. Their failure was due to a half-hearted strategy that never took the fight to its conclusion - a failure which demoralised the Labour and trade union movement in Lothian, and which this NALGO action could reverse.

If they decide to strike, these workers will need all the support you can otter. Messages of support: c/o Sylvia Crick, NALGO Lothian Region Social Work shop stewards committee, 20 St Giles St, Edinburgh.
