IN Southwark, Labour gained 12 seats from the SDP but lost three seats in Riverside ward to "independent Labour" candidates led by Coral Newell and publicly supported by Bermondsey Labour MP Bob Mellish.
Don shiach, chair. of Bermondsey Labour Party, told Socialist Organiser:
"We took everything else in Southwark that we really could have taken, but we lost Riverside. We attribute that directly to Mellish's intervention, and we're more than a bit angry about it.
"We've gathered together all the evidence, and it has gone to the NEC Organisation Sub-Committee.
"The Newell fraction ran a very unpleasant campaign of smear and innuendo against Labour. And of course Newell's two running mates are not members of the Labour Party. Mellish was giving support to two people who are nothing to do with the Party.
